Summer's Almost Here!

Wow, it's been half a year since I last posted. Whoops!

I've been scatterbrained for the last several days dealing with a new project that I'm helping out on, so I figured I'd try to clear my head a bit and jot down some things I've got planned for summer.

- I've gotten myself into restoring vintage Schwinn's. I've got to repaint and rebuild a 59 Panther for myself and then it's on to fixing up an old Grape Krate for my brother and a Little Lemon Peeler for my son.

- I'm going to be playing in a couple of golf outings this summer. I've been playing almost 20 years since my grandfather took me out to Ridgewood Golf Course for the first time. After getting out last weekend for the first time in about a year, I've come to the conclusion that I still pretty much suck.

The problem with my 50/50 ability in golf is that the teams that I joined have it in their heads that I'm a 'ringer'....it's kind of a joke, but I don't want to completely blow the perception, so I think I'm going to try to get to the range at least twice a week and hit a round at least once a week until these outings come and go.

- My fitness plan is to get my ass on one of my bikes and ride at least 10-15 miles a week and pick up the kettlebells again. I have such good intentions, but, lounging around is so much easier.

- I'm going to try to not worry about my job. It's hard to know what to worry about from one day to the next. I've seen so many people let go over the last several months, but there is still a lot of work to get done. I'm just not sure what decisions are going to be made, so I can't fret about where this is going to end up. Either, I'm going to be employed through next summer or I'm going to end up making videos about puppets and skeletons like Glittergirl.

- I'm going to take advantage of the outdoors this season. Our bikes are all tuned up and I picked up a trailer for my son, so I hope to get out on the trails a lot this year.

- Here's hoping this little bit of writing helped to break my writer's block, so I can finish writing a script for an application that I have yet to see :-)

That bike thing is very cool. I envy for having an activity like that that you're passionate about and look forward to doing. I haven't been able to find that for myself yet.

I'm getting into golf myself. Last time I played was about 10 years ago (even took in college). At this new job, they have a golf league, and there's no expectations on skill level, so I just said screw it, I'm going to take up golf. First week of the league I shot an 80 for 9 holes, but played on the same ball the whole round, so I was pleased with myself :)

I hear ya on the fitness thing, intentions only get us so far. I've decided that once I get my plantar fasciitis worked out, I'm going to join the Wellness Center up the street from my office. It's supposed to be medically geared and give you some recommendations on what to do, rather than just tossing you into the equipment area and saying, "Good luck! Go work out and stuff"

And that's the right attitude on the work front. Just do your job the best you can, try to keep your ears peeled for obvious pitfalls to watch out for, but the day to day concern over what's going to happen with you job is out of your control unfortunately.

This place can make you crazy if you worry about the rumors that are constantly swirling, so that's why I've decided (well, I decided a year ago) to forget about it. It's only for the fact that there have recently been a lot of people that have either left or been let go that kind of gets those feelings swirling again. I try to keep them pinned in a deep dark corner.

As far as the bikes, I love it. My wife, not so much. More to the point, she hates that I go full tilt when I pick up a new hobby - we currently have a house full of bikes and noone to ride them. It just happened that I found all the bikes that I was looking for on Craigslist within a week of each other, so they piled up real quick.

If you're into tinkering, I'd recommend trying to rebuild a bike, if only to just resell it. The upside is - you have a bike you can use. The other upside is that they are not that complicated and you can't F them up that bad.

Golf is a pissy lady, that's for sure. It doesn't care if you've had a good day in the past, it lives by "what have you done for me lately". But, it'll let you play one really nice hole here and there, so you get the false sense of security that you're getting the hang of it and you return to get your nuts rucked all over again. At least that's how I feel about it.
